Muara
the seating for the brave new world
Project Duration: 6 weeks
Designed for: BISMO
Category: Furniture Design, Biomimicry, Speculative Design

Context
Set in the year 2065, climate change is at an all-time high. Water levels are constantly rising, with numerous islands already submerged.

The new "normal" for coastal cities? Mild flooding twice a day at high tides (~12 hours apart)

The world must adapt soon, or face mass loss of human life.
Problem statement
How might we adapt communal seating to not only mitigate damage caused by daily flooding but also help reduce the impact of disasters?
The Inspiration
Mangroves

Mangroves are known to act as a natural barrier against storm surges and high waves, their roots reducing the force of incoming waters and slowing down the flow speed. They also stabilise the coastline by trapping sediment, which helps build up land and prevent erosion - something that increases a flood's impact.
