ULUKA
an audio experience from the future
Project Duration: 7 weeks
Designed for: CREATIVE Technologies
Category: Audio Technology Design, Biomimicry
Inspired by the face structure of a barn owl, Uluka
is a directional speaker designed to maximise its
efficiency, providing the best listening experience.

Context and target users
Designed for the year 2030, aimed at the Gen Z population (aged 18-33), Uluka seeks to provide the best audio quality without compromising on privacy and efficiency.

The Inspiration
Barn owls are known for their incredible hearing, which they achieve by manipulating sound waves.
The following helps them do this:
-
Concave i.e. parabolic head shape
-
Reflector feathers that are present in the ruff

I incorporated the above features into my design for a speaker to optimise the energy usage and maximise the quality of the sound output of a directional speaker.

Features
-
Directional speakers are located in the central, dark circle.
-
Soft organic silicone ridges mimic the reflector feathers' structure, ensuring no sound deflects from the path
-
The rim light colour depicts the battery level.
-
Red = Low battery, Warm White = sufficiently charged.
-
The central dot light is a sensor to turn Uluka on and off.
-
Lit dot = on, Unlit dot = off
-
Seamless stand in the back, tucks away like an owl's legs.
